Abstract

Social identities and cultural consumptions in Argentine:  the case of  cinema MA Ana Wortman, School of Social Sciences, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

If we study contemporary societies we know that a new middle class has developed in western countries. But nowadays this middle class is extremely heterogeneous.

The purpose of this article is to present this new phenomenon through the analysis of cultural compsumption of urban people in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. We are thinking those middle classes called "the new poor" in our country which were formed two decades ago and increased during the nineties. If historically, the social identity of urban middle classes was the consequence of a lifestyle based on education and cultural practices (cinema, literature, theater consumptions) during a long time for social promotion, always thinking in a better future, at present we can appreciate a diversification of lifestyles: at a domestic order in uses of leisure time, uses of the city, and specifically cultural consumptions where mass media have occupied an importantplace. Thus, we pose the following question: does this process imply a globalized habitus in Bourdieu terms?
