ABSTRACT

VARIATIONS OF SEXISM IN GRAPHIC PRESS. CASES OF MAXIM AND COSMOPOLITAN

In recent times, mass media has increased its importance in the active construction of social reality, given its greater accessibility, its technological development, and the process of mediatization that pervades contemporary societies. This turns media discourses into privileged terrain for the analysis of the construction of subjectivities and, particularly, of subjectivities of gender. In the present work, discursive analysis, gender theories and communications theories were combined to analyze the discursive strategies through which the print press constructs representations of gender, particularly in two magazines from the same publisher but meant for different publics: Maxim (for men) and Cosmopolitan (for women). It was proposed to explore, in this way, the differences and similarities between both magazines, and to locate the possible presence of sexist elements in said representations.

Keywords: gender – written press – sexism – discursive analysis.
